I’m not sure if it’s official, but to me October is Apple month! Not only is it my favorite fruit, but it has to be the most versatile too. So thought I’d throw a few riffs out on America’s favorite. (Feel free to throw a few back now ya’ll!)

  1. Bake a Pie – no brainer (see previous post)! Nothing more American than that.
  2. Make Mulled Cider: Boil 1 gallon of cider and 1 cup brown sugar. Add 1 1/2 tsp allspice, 1 1/2 tsp ground cloves & 4 cinnamon sticks. Simmer 15 min.
  3. Stir up some Applesauce - Cook down a bag of apples, run it through a sieve and add cinnamon, sugar and a little nutmeg.
  4. Create Apple Chips - Slice thin 3 apples; bake on a cookie sheet at 200 degrees for 1 hr. Sprinkle with salt OR cinnamon.
  5. Panini Sandwich - Thinly sliced apple, black forest ham and brie cheese – Grilled on your favorite bread, YUM!
  6. Salad additions – Add diced apples and walnuts to your salad for a fresh fall-ish take.
  7. Anytime snack – Who doesn’t love apples dipped in peanut butter? Try adding some raisins and a slight pinch of salt on top.
  8. Faux Apple Tart - Butter a whole-wheat pita; top with apple slices and cinnamon. Toast for 10 min at 350 degrees. Drizzle with honey!
  9. Caramel Apples – Who can’t resist these gems?? Try adding something new after dipping in caramel: Crushed nuts, toffee bars, pretzels or M&M’s.
  10. Bob for apples! Go ahead – No one said this game is just for kids. :-)
